We have established an agreement with a new fuel supplier for our race fuel. Ukay Fuels will now be supplying our karts with the exact mix of race fuel we require each season. This is a great help as it allows us to tune our engines and carbs to the exact mix while knowing the fuel has not changed in any way. All Ikonn Racing members were also presented with Ukay Fuels new Fuel card for discounted prices on everyday automotive fuel. The newly formed sister company Fuelogic offers cheaper fuel on a monthly invoice basis. This easy solution allows you to find fuel garages close to you via their website and simply fill up as usual and present the fuel card as payment.

Daytona invitational - Milton Keynes
Jon Carydice proceeded to set the fastest laps of the day in this 90 minute endurance. The only hiccup to his victory was a spinning kart that nearly took him off mid way through the race. The dominance of his victory proved very popular amongst the race organisers which, in turn, sparked off interest in the team sponsors.

KRC Club Championship - Shenington Rd7
Reece was looking to capitalise on recent good form and perform well at a track he loves. Heat one saw Reece finish 5th/29 after a hard battle at the front. Heat two was a great race from Reece who made a brilliant start to finish 2nd/29. In heat three Reece encountered an engine problem and was forced to finish 27th/29. With the first two good results, Reece had made the ‘A’ final and with the engine problem fixed he proceeded to continue the good form he showed all day and finish 2nd/29 overall.

After the disappointment of the last round we approached this round with renewed optimism. The previous week saw the team successfully complete a component test at rye house and record the life cycle of various parts by simulating a full race distance of 1h 30mins. Brake wear was the number one priority as we tested various pads, discs, calipers, fluids and brake springs. We also tested a variety of different fuels and wheel rims. We felt well prepared on race day and all went to plan during the warm up. As we approached the qualifying session, we bolted on our race tyres only to find the left rear had lost pressure. We only had 20 minutes to solve the issue and qualify. After checking the wheel and tyre, we found a valve core failure and changed the core. By the time we had repaired the problem the qualifying session was over. We qualified last.
As the race started we immediately started to make up positions and capitalised on some errors from other teams. We were now racing in the mid-field and had made up 12 positions. Were were now in 14th position. As we were breaking into the top ten, Chris Davis fell victim to a desperate lunge from the driver behind who spun our kart and left us in the tyre barrier. The kart sustained a bent steering column and needed to be recovered for repair. We decided to repair the kart as best we could to continue the race but we had already lost a great number of laps. John Carydice went out for the final stint and finished the race. Overall we finished 18th/26 and was left ruing what could have been.

Formula Silverstone
John Carydice and Richard Lewis attended the invitational Formula Silverstone test event. Both drivers enjoyed putting the modified Formula Renalt cars through their paces and while doing so set the fastest laps of the day. Once again the team race suits were generating interest and sponsor exposure increased.

Much of the talk around the paddock today was of our kart livery and race suits. As a result of this many people wanted to know about our sponsors and quickly took information so they could view the team website later that evening.
Our race preparation was good as we decided to use both practice and qualifying sessions to record tyre / wheel data for later in the race. As expected we qualified near the back but were confident of our race pace. Reece Wade started the race and immediately pushed forward into sixth place while others were involved in a collision in turn two. Reece’s race pace was excellent as he was consistent with his speed and set the second fastest lap at that point in the race. At around the 35 minute mark Reece started experiencing some problems then without any further warning, the caliper seals failed sending Reece off the track with brake failure. The impact bent the axle, steering column and bodywork. Our race for the day was over.

Richard Lewis travelled to Scotland to race a one-off invitational ICA event. As this class is all but extinct, it proved a rare opportunity to revisit the racing that he was so used to in the early days of karting. Heat one was a tough heat but Richard finished 5th/28. Heat two saw Richard finish 1st/28. Heat 3 was similar to the the first heat but Richard finished 2nd/28. Once in the ‘A’ final starting 2nd, Richard immediately took the lead in turn 1 and proceeded to leave the field behind as he eased to victory with around 11 seconds to spare.

Club100 Advance Leisure - Round 8 (Rye House)
Race: 3hr Endurance | Drivers: Richard Lewis, John Carydice, Reece Wade
For the last race of the Club100 season Reece raced in the senior team. Due to his achievements and competence in 2007 he was granted a drive by the Club100 management. (Reece is 15 and a junior. You must be 16 or over to race club 100). During free practice we tested our kart but found it to have no bottom end. The Kart was given to a Club100 tester who agreed and changed it for us. Once in the new kart we were on the pace immediately. All drivers agreed the Kart was good to race and Richard set about putting qualifying laps together.
It was a full grid today with 37 teams participating. We qualified 3rd only to find one of us overlook under yellow flags and in turn, collected a penalty. We were placed at the back of the grid. Last! Ben worked out the strategy and Richard got ready to start the race.
After 6 rolling up laps, the race got under way. Richard started to cut through the field, he took three karts around the outside of stadium and proceeded to take another two into the run up to the hairpin. 32nd place! Richard drove every lap like a qualifying lap for 20 mins and after pulling up to 10th place, he pitted for fual and a driver change. John went on to drive perfectly for his stint gaining another three places and and pitting from 7th place. Reece joined the race in 11th after the pitstop and proceeded to make his mark on the race by cutting through the field as if he was at a test session. He showed remarkable composure and consistency as he raced through his stint. This was his first Senior race and he's still not a senior driver!
Reece pitted for fuel and Richard jumped back into the seat. We joined the race in 6th position after the pitstop. A clean, progressive stint rewarded the team with 1st place in the running order. The light was now starting to get low and all drivers were told to change to clear visors if other types were being used. John went back out and continued to pressure the backmarkers. Then out of nowhere, a backmarker tagged the back of John Kart and put us into a spin. The recovery kart got us going again but we had been pushed down to 3rd place. Reece went back out to finish his final stint and the race. The Strategy was perfect for the day and all was looking good for 3rd place or maybe 2nd given the pace we were running. Then, bang, another shunt from behind! Reece was pushed off into the grass. The kart was quickly recovered and Reece continued. We fiished the race in 4th place and was awarded a trophy. (1st-5th place).

Daytona 500 - Single Race Event
Race: 6hr (Approx.) Endurance | Drivers: Chris Davis, Richard Lewis, (Guest Driver)
Team was racing under the name of RED M1ST.
Louis Lazzarus from Abbey 1 took pole position but was he able to turn that into a race victory? Teams that had competed in the inaugural Daytona 500 back in May were a little concerned as they arrived on site to be greeted by a wet track and rain in the air. That Sunday in May it rained all day and that was something that competitors and officials alike were keen not to happen again!
All the karts had been fitted with updated steering geometry to lighten the weight of the steering, which had become heavier following recent work to re enforce the front end of the chassis. The lighter steering took some teams a little longer than others to get used to in practice. Abbey 1 mastered the new driving technique sooner than others with Louis Lazzarus taking pole in a time of 1:30.937 Joining them on the front of the grid were their sister team of Abbey 2 with a 1:31.497. The second row comprised Honda F1 1:31.779 and TBR 1:32.149
Due to everyone’s prompt arrival the race started a little earlier than planned. The karts took the rolling start side by side and tip toed round the first few laps. Honda quickly gained the advantage only to spin back down to third after getting caught out on the greasy surface. Although the rain stopped soon after the race start the temperature remained low as did the wind speed. These two elements combined to slow down the track drying process. After just over 30 minutes of running most teams had their karts dialled in though and were achieving lap times in the low 1:30’s. An early visitor to pits was the Moonwalkers with a troublesome engine. Quick work by the engineers ensured they weren’t delayed too long and returned to the business of getting back in touch with the field.
Before the hour mark early pace setters Abbey 1 were in the pits with an overheated brake system. The pit crew had them back out quickly but that early advantage had disappeared and they re-emerged in 6th place now 4 laps behind the leaders Honda F1. TBR were pressuring the leaders in third with Red M1st and Speed bird North just behind them. With 2 hours of running and 80 laps completed it was Honda F1 who had established a 4 lap lead from the chasing pack. They had only used their kart for several laps in practice and as a result their fuel load lasted significantly longer than the other teams. Abbey 2 had now made second their own and pulled out 3 laps from Red M1st in third. Abbey 1 then headed 3 teams on 74 laps Rain Masters, Speed bird North and the Usual Suspects. The track was nearly dry now with lap times tumbling Hepworth International had the fastest lap on the board a 1:11.873.
The new comers from Warwick University began to excel as the track dried and had managed to manoeuvre themselves up to 7th with good team strategy and sensible driving keeping themselves out of trouble. The Moonwalkers had also got themselves back into the top ten following their earlier kart issue. Several new comers to the Daytona 500 were certainly enjoying the challenge associated with a race of this magnitude. 179 laps on the board (half distance) and there were good battles developing throughout the field. The engineers brought every kart in for a 3 minute inspection during the event to check that the oil levels were OK and to carry out a nut and bolt check. The karts were called in to the pits in number order so while Honda had completed their stop Abbey 2 had not so were showing as being only 13 seconds behind were actually more like 3 laps and 13 seconds behind.
While the focus was on the battles at the front of the field there were still some close encounters away from the top 10. The Usual Suspects headed this battle for karts outside the top 10, just ahead of the Magnificent 7, Dude Where’s my kart and the Marlboro Heavy’s. Abbey 1 were looking comfortable in 3rd position when their right exhaust developed a crack and the sound emitting from their GX 200 sounded more like a Nascar than a race kart. The resultant stop in Engineering cost them any chance of challenging the leaders but more importantly meant Red M1st were hot on their heels in the battle for the final podium spot.
The track was now sufficiently dry for the team’s lap times to drop down to the 1:10 mark and 4 teams achieved this with Hepworth International Driver Paul Marsh achieving a very quick time, which turned out to be the best time of the day 1:10.031 and ensured he received the unique D500 fastest lap T-Shirt. As the laps counted down and there were nearly 300 laps completed the top 3 karts were getting increasingly far apart. Honda were leading by 6 laps from Abbey 2 who in turn were leading Abbey 1 by 6 laps. Meanwhile the closest battles on track were 6th through 9th as TBR, Speed bird North, The usual Suspects and Hepworth International all sat on 269 laps less than half a lap apart!
As the closing stages of the races beckoned and with approximately 30 minutes remaining Abbey 1 had a lead over Red M1st of 30 seconds. The team had agreed at the start of the day come what may to divide the racing equally amongst themselves. So with a slender lead to 4th Abbey 1 pitted and managed to retain 3rd but only by a couple of seconds. Red M1st then set about hauling in the 3rd placed team and after a hard battle found a way through. Once through they were able to pull out a small gap which they maintained to the chequered flag.
The chequered flag was taken by Honda F1 after 500Km of racing and 358 laps and received as 1st prize a VIP day out for 4 with Chevrolet Race driver Oliver Gavin at the Silverstone round of the Lemans Endurance Series. It was a fantastic days racing enjoyed by all, so rest assured the Daytona 500 will certainly be back on the Daytona racing calendar for next year with as before more top line prizes for the winners.
